Connect Magento 2 to your accounting and marketplaces
Magento 2 has a built-in node in n8n, and for the rest I use the Magento REST API. This integration runs in production in my own webshop: orders from Magento 2 are booked automatically in Zoho Books, without retyping.
In productionBuilt-in n8n integration
What you connect with Magento 2
- Orders as an invoice in Zoho Books, Exact Online or AFAS
- Credit notes for returns
- Keep stock in line with bol.com and other marketplaces
- Customer data to your CRM
- Shipping labels through Sendcloud or MyParcel
How the integration works
The integration fetches new and changed orders and converts them to the format of your accounting, including VAT per country. Every order gets a fixed reference, so repeating is safe. On an error, the order goes to a queue and you get an alert.
Facts about the Magento 2 API
Checked on 2 November 2026 against the official documentation. Limits, prices and versions change; the source is listed per row.
| Fact | What the documentation says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Integration token (an integration under System, Extensions, Integrations) or an admin or customer token as Bearer. Using an integration token as Bearer is disabled by default and has to be switched on deliberately. | Adobe Commerce: Authentication |
| Token lifetime | Admin token 4 hours by default, customer token 1 hour, both configurable. An integration token stays valid until you revoke it. The configuration docs tie the lifetime to the JWT setting (60 minutes by default); sources differ on this point. | Adobe Commerce: Token-based authentication |
| Rate limits | No general API limit. There is an optional limit on ordering and payment (429 when exceeded, off by default) and input limits such as a maximum of 300 items per page. | Adobe Commerce: Rate limiting |
| Webhooks | Not in core. Adobe ships separate modules: Webhooks (from 2.4.5) and I/O Events (Adobe Commerce only, not Magento Open Source). Without those modules the integration polls orders at fixed intervals. | Adobe Commerce: Webhooks |
| Test environment | No Adobe sandbox; you test on your own staging install. | Adobe Commerce: Get started |
| Version | REST paths with V1, for example /rest/default/V1/orders. No versioning policy is described. | Adobe Commerce: REST API |
| API cost | No separate API cost. Magento Open Source is free; Adobe Commerce is licensed. | Adobe Commerce: Get started |
| n8n | Built-in Magento 2 node for customers, invoices, orders and products, using a token from an integration. | n8n documentation |
What you need on your side
- An administrator who can create an integration with a token under System, Extensions, Integrations, with only the permissions the integration needs
- HTTPS and a REST API reachable from the n8n server
- A staging environment of the webshop to test against
- The VAT rules per country on paper: OSS, reverse-charged VAT for business customers
Where it often goes wrong, and how I prevent it
- VAT per country: if you sell in Belgium or Germany, OSS and reverse-charge VAT for business customers come into play. I record those rules in advance.
- Returns and credit notes: a return must put the stock back and credit the invoice, not create a new order.
- Multiple store views: each store view can have its own prices and languages. The integration keeps them apart.
- Extensions: extensions sometimes change the order format. Monitoring catches that before it reaches the accounts.
In practice
In my own webshop (NL, BE, DE), orders from Magento 2 go automatically to Zoho Books at the right VAT rate. I only check the exceptions.
What it costs
I build a Magento 2 integration as one scoped process for a fixed price, from €750. Maintenance and monitoring are a monthly fee: n8n management from €250 per month, server management €145 per server. In the free assessment we work out your process. All prices and what is included →
What I do not do
- I do not build Magento extensions; the integration runs outside the webshop in n8n.
- Magento upgrades and hosting only come with a management agreement.
- I do not use Adobe I/O Events on Magento Open Source, because Adobe does not support it there.
Frequently asked questions about connecting Magento 2
Does n8n have a Magento node?
Yes, n8n has a built-in Magento 2 node. For what it does not cover, I use the Magento REST API in the same workflow.
Does this also work with Adobe Commerce?
Adobe Commerce is the business version of Magento and uses the same kind of API. In the assessment we look at your version and extensions.
Can stock stay in line with bol.com?
Yes. The integration passes stock changes on to bol.com, so you do not oversell when something sells in the webshop.
Does Magento 2 have webhooks?
Not in core. Adobe ships separate modules: Webhooks from 2.4.5 and I/O Events for Adobe Commerce only. Without those modules the integration polls new orders at fixed intervals, for example every five minutes, and records what has been processed.
How long does a Magento token stay valid?
An admin token four hours by default and a customer token one hour; an integration token stays valid until you revoke it. The integration uses an integration with its own permissions, so it does not have to log in again every few hours.
