Shopify automation: connect Shopify to your accounting, stock and CRM
Shopify has a built-in node and trigger in n8n. With them I connect orders, products and customers to your accounting, stock and CRM. The workflows run in your own EU environment and belong to you.
StandardBuilt-in n8n integration
Shopify automation: what you connect
- Orders as an invoice in Exact Online, Moneybird or AFAS
- Keep stock in line with your warehouse or marketplaces
- Customers and order history to your CRM
- Shipping labels and tracking through Sendcloud or MyParcel
- Refunds as a credit note in the accounts
How the integration works
The Shopify trigger starts a workflow on a new or changed order; the Shopify node reads and writes products, customers and orders. Where the node does not support a field, I use the Shopify Admin API directly. Every processed order is recorded, so nothing happens twice.
Facts about the Shopify API
Checked on 2 November 2026 against the official documentation. Limits, prices and versions change; the source is listed per row.
| Fact | What the documentation says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | Access token per store. You create a custom app in the Dev Dashboard; that requires the App developer role. | Shopify: Authentication |
| Token lifetime | Offline tokens: non-expiring, or expiring after 1 hour with a 90-day refresh token. Online tokens expire after 24 hours. | Shopify: Access tokens |
| Rate limits | The GraphQL Admin API uses a point budget per app and store: 100 points per second restored on Standard, 200 on Advanced, 1,000 on Plus. When exceeded, Shopify returns HTTP 200 with the error THROTTLED, not 429. | Shopify: Rate limits |
| Webhooks | Yes, for example orders/create and products/update, signed with HMAC-SHA256. Eight retries over four hours; after that Shopify removes the subscription. Delivery is not guaranteed. | Shopify: Webhooks |
| Test environment | Development stores through a Partner account, without real transactions. | Shopify: Development stores |
| Version | A new API version every quarter (for example 2026-10), each supported for at least twelve months. The REST Admin API has been legacy since 1 October 2024. | Shopify: Versioning |
| API cost | No separate cost. Apps with Level 2 PII access require the Grow plan or higher. | Shopify Help: Custom apps |
| n8n | Built-in Shopify node and Shopify trigger; an access token is the recommended credential. | n8n documentation |
What you need on your side
- A Shopify administrator with the App developer role who can create a custom app with an access token in the Dev Dashboard
- An overview of your markets and currencies, so VAT and amounts land correctly in the accounts
- Access to the accounting package or CRM on the other side
- With high order volumes: the Shopify plan you are on, because it sets the API budget per second
Where it often goes wrong, and how I prevent it
- API versions: Shopify regularly releases new API versions and retires old ones. The integration uses a fixed version and is updated during maintenance.
- Multiple currencies and markets: if you sell in several countries, currencies and VAT per market must land correctly in the accounts.
- Metafields: extra product data often lives in metafields. I include them explicitly in what we agree.
- Refunds: a partial refund must become a matching credit note, not a new invoice.
In practice
The pattern is the same as in my integrations for WooCommerce and Magento 2: orders booked as invoices, stock in line, and an alert for every exception.
What it costs
I build a Shopify integration as one scoped process for a fixed price, from €750. Maintenance and monitoring are a monthly fee: n8n management from €250 per month, server management €145 per server. In the free assessment we work out your process. All prices and what is included →
What I do not do
- I do not build public apps for the Shopify App Store; the integration is a custom app for your store.
- I do not use the legacy REST Admin API for new integrations.
- I do not make theme changes in Shopify.
Frequently asked questions about Shopify automation
Does n8n have a Shopify integration?
Yes. n8n has a built-in Shopify node and Shopify trigger. That makes the integration faster to build and cheaper than custom work via the API.
Where does the integration run?
On a server in the EU that is yours or that I set up for you. Your data does not pass through an AIAgentCycle environment.
Does it work with several Shopify stores?
Yes. Each store gets its own route and its own keys, with the same monitoring.
Do I get an error when Shopify throttles the integration?
Not as a normal error code. Shopify returns HTTP 200 with the error THROTTLED in the response body. The integration reads that response and waits until budget is available again. Anyone who only checks the status code misses it.
What happens when Shopify releases a new API version?
Shopify releases a version every quarter and supports each one for at least twelve months. The integration is pinned to a fixed version. Under maintenance I move it over in time, with a test beforehand.
